October 22-29, 2009 Green Turtle Bay Marina

October 22-29, 2009

Green turtle Bay Marina, Grand Rivers, Kentucky

We have been here for 5 days and plan to be here until the morning of October 29. We will then begin the last 600 miles of the trip to Mobile Bay. We have enjoyed our stay here and have been doing little projects on Grateful. We have had a couple of sunny, warm days so Grateful is clean inside and out. We have taken the dinghy off the top of Grateful and put it in the lake, and taken a harbor cruise. Green turtle Bay is a huge marina – Mark estimates over 500 boats. Transients come and go as we relax here. The Emily E has made it here and we have re-united with Jim & Debbie and their new crewmate, Irv. Tonight we all went to dinner at Patti’s for the famous 2” pork chop with them. Mark has reconstructed one of the dashboard panels in teak as it had disintegrated on one of the first days of our trip – it looks MUCH better.

Today, the diesel mechanic came to inspect the port engine and help us figure out why we had the loss of RPMs on Thursday when we came up the Cumberland River. As he work and Mark “went to school”, it was determined that the primary and secondary fuel filters were the culprits, and changing or draining was all that was needed. We have since ordered replacement parts for these and will continue to have them on hand as we travel.

Just know we are well and taking a break. Keep in touch – we love to hear from you. I have attached pictures of the Green Turtle Bay Marina area. Dea and Dave, I expect to see an autumn display similar to some of these pictures next fall with the harvest from your gardenJ

  1. Glad to here all is well. I am enjoying your trip from the North Country. Sammy says to say Hi to Porter and to give him a "paws up".

  2. Good to hear from you. It's been 100% rain today and so far all the caulking Mark did this week is holding. He went to the hardware store with the marina loan car and I am doing laundry. Port is hanging out trying to dry off from our morning walk. At least this isn't snow. Hi to Di and Sammy.

  3. FINALLY!!! It looks like you guys have found the sun (although, from the comment above, it was short-lived)!! Your last few pictures have been gloomy...

I tried calling you tonight. If you're still on MN time, it was 10pm for you. WHAT??? You guys go to bed early? I thought retired people stay up late and get up early -- too much to enjoy!

Sounds exciting to be at such a huge marina! Neat that you ran into friends! Where did you meet them originally??

Love you guys lots! Keep having fun!

  4. Sorry we missed your call! WE met this couple coincidentally at the West Marine store in Ridgedale before we left on our trip. We were all there to buy final things for our Great Loop trip. When we stopped at Alton, IL, Jim came over to give us a hand at landing and we recognized each other. We had dinner there and then again here when we met up again. It would be great if we see them again along the way.
    Love you!!!!

  5. Hi Guys, Enjoyed talking with you Sun. from the N.H. airport. It only took me 16 hrs. to get home, due to mechanical problems out of Washington/Dulles. At least we didn't have to sit in the plane. Before that, I did have a great week traveling the country roads of N.H., Vt. and Mass. and saw lots of color in the leaves and great covered bridges. Crisp and sunny days, some rain at night and one day, but that was refreshing. Sounds like you have been having "refreshing" days too. I got to S.D. to 100 temp and high winds one day and 65 and overcast the next. It has evened out at 75 and sunny now. So, when are you heading to the west coast?
Good to hear you are taking some R&R. How much lighter is the boat (which means, how much booze have you consumed)?

I love your photos and have sent some to your e-mail.
    Love you, Judy
